Setting Up your Australian myGov in 2026: Link ATO and Medicare the Right Way (shortcuts)

The Hub of Your Australian Life:
A Complete myGov Masterclass

If you have just arrived in Australia, you probably have a growing collection of cards and numbers—your TFN, your Medicare card, and maybe a new driver’s licence. Carrying these around is one thing, but managing them digitally is where the real "Australian life admin" begins.

Enter myGov. It is the central digital post office for the Australian government. Instead of having five different logins for tax, health, and welfare, you have one. But let’s be honest: setting it up and linking services can be a headache if you don’t know the shortcuts.

This guide breaks down the 2026 process to get you connected without the usual technical frustrations. Let's go!!

Pre-Setup Checklist: What You Need in Front of You

Before you even open the myGov website, grab these items. Having them ready will prevent the system from timing you out.

  • A Private Email Address: Use your personal one (very important), not a work or university email.

  • Your Australian Mobile Number: You’ll need this for SMS security codes.

  • Your Tax File Number (TFN): Essential for the ATO link.

  • Your Medicare Card: (If applicable) To access health records.

  • Your Bank Details: The account where you expect to receive tax refunds or Medicare rebates.

Phase 1: Creating Your Digital Key (The myGov Account)

  1. Start at the Source: Head to the official my.gov.au website.

  2. The Identity Verification: You will enter your email and receive a code. This is your first layer of security.

  3. Password Strength: In 2026, security is tighter than ever. Use a mix of symbols and avoid anything obvious.

  4. The Secret Questions: Choose questions you will actually remember in three years. Tip: Many people take a screenshot of these answers and keep them in a secure folder. 💬

Phase 2: Connecting the Dots (Linking Services)

An empty myGov account is like a smartphone with no apps. You need to "Link" your services to make it useful.

1. Linking the Australian Taxation Office (ATO)

This is the most common link. It allows you to see how much tax you’ve paid and lodge your tax return.

  • Go to 'View and link services'.

  • Select 'Australian Taxation Office'.

  • The "Questions" Hurdle: The ATO will ask you two things to prove who you are. Usually, it's your bank account details and your TFN.

  • Stuck? If you are new to Australia and the system doesn't "know" you yet, you will need a Linking Code. Call the ATO at 13 28 61
👀If you’ve reached this stage, stop everything and just call that number. The hold time can be very long, so I recommend calling early in the morning. First, you need to get that code to verify your identity before any related process can move forward.  Please trust me—you’ll save a huge amount of time.

2. Linking Medicare

Once linked, your Medicare card lives on your phone.

  • Select 'Medicare' from the list.

  • Enter your Medicare card number and your individual reference number (the digit next to your name).

  • Answer a few questions about your last doctor's visit (date and clinic name).

Essential Contact Quick-Reference

If the online system says "Details do not match," don't keep trying—you might get locked out. Use these official numbers instead:

DepartmentPurposeOfficial Number
myGov HelpdeskLogin/Password issues13 23 07
ATOTFN & Linking Codes13 28 61
MedicareCard & Health Linking132 011
CentrelinkPayments & CRN132 307

Phase 3: Security & The "myGov app"

The best way to use this service is via the myGov app. It allows you to use your phone's biometrics (FaceID or Fingerprint) so you don't have to wait for an SMS code every time.

When logging in through the app, Face ID login is available on Apple devices. Once you sign up, you will be logged in automatically, and the welcome screen shown above will appear.

Pro-Tips for Security:

  • The "Digital Wallet": You can add your Medicare card to your phone's digital wallet through the app. It's legally valid at pharmacies and GPs.

  • Phishing Alert: The ATO or myGov will never send you an SMS with a link to login. If you see a link in a text message, it is a scam. Always go through the official app or type the URL yourself.

  • Traveling? If you go overseas and change your SIM card, you might get locked out because you can't receive the SMS code. Change your sign-in option to the 'Code Generator app' before you fly.

Troubleshooting Common "Newcomer" Errors

  • "Name Mismatch": If your Medicare card has a middle name but your TFN doesn't, the link will fail. You may need to call one of the agencies to align your names exactly.  Please, make all your official documents the same as your passport. It will save you a lot of time and money in your life.

  • "Error Code RFSH.50": This often means the system is performing maintenance. Wait two hours and try again rather than resetting your password. You’ll come across posts like this surprisingly often… you know? This is Australia. They schedule work mostly at night, but you know how it is—trains also undergo maintenance every weekend, yet they often stop during the busy morning commute.

  • Linking Code Expiry: A linking code provided over the phone is usually only valid for 24 hours. Use it immediately! This whole process may be frustrating and tedious, but since you’ve already sat down and started, finish it now. Otherwise, you’ll end up back at the starting line.

Setting up myGov is a one-time task that pays off every time you visit a doctor or check your payslip. It’s the backbone of your administrative life in Australia.

Welcome to Australia!!!
